When your home was in need of repairs or ready for an update, it was understood that you needed a pretty good chunk of change set aside. However, in recent years this has not necessarily been the case. With the rise of a popular television network called HGTV, a new hobby washed over the nation. “DIY” or Do-it-yourself is basically doing the work of contractors and professionals to save some money. Over time it became much more than just saving money. It became obvious that when you DIY rather than hiring a traditional contractor, it would be much more customized. However, this leaves one very important question. Which is, how is quality affected, and will it affect the price of your home?

Quality with Amateur Home Repairs

Saving money is always great, but is the quality worth it? It would be safe to assume that someone who has no experience would not do well the first time. However, this depends on the situation. With the endless amount of “tips and tricks” on the internet, anyone can learn to do relatively anything. This is by watching a few good videos. To say their quality of work is the same as a contractor depends on the attention to detail they have for the project. However, it is believable to say that quality could be on par, or better given the dedication.

The Effect on your Home Price

Updates done to a home are expected to always increase the home price, but would that be the case if it was done poorly? It simply depends on how poorly. Obviously, if updates are done correctly and it cannot be noticed, would it benefit the home price? However, if someone is selling their home and an inspector notices what was done, it could violate a code that they recommend is fixed before purchasing. This could be simple, or hundreds to thousands of dollars.

While overall it may seem like a great idea to do, they home repairs yourself, be sure to be honest with yourself regarding your capabilities. Saving a few bucks always sounds like a great idea, but if it makes the sale of your house more expensive, it may not be worth it.
